Courses

Hands-on car mechanic courses in 3D

Seven courses on the app's 3D models of real car systems, from the engine to the brakes. Each starts with five short lessons, then gives you two workshop jobs, such as a brake pad change or a clutch kit, where you pick every part, tool and torque. The courses come with Full Garage, the app's one-time unlock.

How a course works

Learn it, follow it, then do it yourself

  1. Learn the system

Five short lessons on the 3D model, each a few cards long. The model comes apart and runs as you read, and every lesson ends with a quick check: tap the right part or pick the right answer.

  2. Follow the job

Each job runs in workshop order. The part to work on glows, and the app shows the step, the tool and the torque.

  3. Do it yourself

Then do the job on your own: pick the next part, the tool, its size and the torque. Wrong picks and hints cost stars, and three stars means a clean job.

Each job opens with its safety notes. The torques are typical values for the app's model: on your own car, follow its service manual.

Seven courses

What each course teaches

Suspension

The MacPherson strut

How the strut carries, damps and steers the wheel, and the jobs that keep it right.

5 lessons

  1. What a strut does
  2. Spring and damper
  3. The whole strut steers
  4. Arms, links and the sway bar
  5. How it fails

2 jobs

  • Replace a sway bar link

Swap a worn sway bar link for a new one: the classic first suspension job.

Straightforward About 30 minutes on a real car

  • Replace a tie-rod end

Swap a worn tie-rod end, keep the alignment close, then have it checked.

Moderate About 45 minutes on a real car

How does a MacPherson strut work?

Wishbone

The double wishbone

How two control arms keep the tire flat on the road, how the coilover carries the car, and how to change a control arm.

5 lessons

  1. Two arms hold the wheel
  2. Camber gain
  3. Spring rate and wheel rate
  4. The steering axis
  5. How it fails

2 jobs

  • Replace an upper control arm

Swap a worn upper control arm: split its ball joint, take out the pivot bolts, slide it out past the coilover, and tighten the new one at ride height.

Moderate About an hour on a real car

  • Replace a lower control arm

Swap a worn lower control arm: free the sway bar link, let the suspension hang so the shock's fork comes free, split the ball joint, drop the arm out, and tighten the new one at ride height.

Demanding About 1 hour 30 minutes on a real car

How does double wishbone suspension work?

Brakes

Brakes

How a rotor brake stops the car, how it wears, and how to change pads and bleed the brakes.

5 lessons

  1. What stops the car
  2. One piston, two pads
  3. Pads and rotors wear
  4. How it fails
  5. ABS and the wheel bearing

2 jobs

  • Change the front pads

Fit new front pads: swing the caliper up, swap the pads, push the piston back and refit.

Moderate About 45 minutes on a real car

  • Bleed the front brakes

Push fresh fluid through the caliper until no air comes out. On a full bleed, start at the wheel furthest from the master cylinder.

Moderate About 30 minutes on a real car

How do disc brakes and ABS work?

Steering

Steering

How the wheel turns the road wheels, how the assist helps, and the jobs on the inner tie rods.

5 lessons

  1. From the wheel to the rack
  2. Power assist
  3. Inner tie rods and toe
  4. Turning circles
  5. How it fails

2 jobs

  • Replace a rack boot

Fit a new boot before grit gets into the rack: the tie-rod end comes off, the old boot slides off the rod, the new one goes on, and everything goes back to its marks.

Moderate About 1 hour 15 minutes on a real car

  • Replace an inner tie rod

Swap a worn inner tie rod: the tie-rod end and the boot come off, the old rod unscrews from the rack, and the new one goes on at the old one's length.

Demanding About 2 hours on a real car

How does rack and pinion steering work?

Drivetrain

Half-shafts and the differential

How the CV joints and the differential get the power to the wheels, and how to fit a boot or a whole half-shaft.

5 lessons

  1. Why the half-shaft needs CV joints
  2. The outer joint
  3. The inner joint plunges
  4. The differential
  5. How it fails

2 jobs

  • Replace an outer CV boot

Fit a new boot to the outer joint before grit ruins it: the joint comes off the shaft, gets fresh grease, and goes back with new clamps.

Demanding About 2 hours on a real car

  • Replace a half-shaft

Swap the whole half-shaft, joints and all: out of the hub, levered out of the transmission, and the new one clicked back in.

Moderate About 1 hour 30 minutes on a real car

How do a CV axle and a differential work?

Engine

The engine

How four strokes, the valves, the oil and the spark make an engine run, and the two services every owner can do.

5 lessons

  1. Four strokes
  2. Valves and cams
  3. Oil under pressure
  4. The spark
  5. How it fails

2 jobs

  • Change the oil and filter

The service that matters most: drain the old oil warm, fit a new filter and a new washer on the plug, fill up and check the level.

Straightforward About 45 minutes on a real car

  • Change the spark plugs

Fresh plugs for a smooth idle and a clean burn: the coils come out, the plugs come out one at a time, and each new one goes in to its torque.

Straightforward About 40 minutes on a real car

How does a four-stroke engine work?

Clutch

The clutch

How the clutch clamps, lets go and bites, and how to bleed it or fit a new kit.

5 lessons

  1. What a clutch does
  2. Where the clamp comes from
  3. From pedal to fork
  4. The bite point
  5. How it fails

2 jobs

  • Bleed the clutch

Push fresh fluid through to the slave cylinder until no air comes out, for a firm pedal and a clean bite point.

Straightforward About 30 minutes on a real car

  • Replace the clutch kit

Fit a new clutch kit (disc, pressure plate and release bearing) and a new slave cylinder. The job starts with the transmission ready to come out.

Demanding About 5 hours on a real car

Questions about the courses

Is this a certified car mechanic course?

No. The courses teach how each system works and walk you through 14 common jobs on the app's 3D models, but they are not accredited by ASE or any other body. A career as a technician starts with an accredited program or an apprenticeship.

Can I do these jobs on my own car afterward?

The jobs follow the real order of work, so you know the steps, the tools and what to check. They are a training simulation with typical values for the app's model: on your own car, follow its service manual for the procedure and the torques, and never work under a car held only by a jack.

Do I need tools or a car?

No. Every job happens on the 3D model, and you pick each tool from a tray in the app.

How do I get the courses?

Full Garage, the app's one-time unlock. It opens every system and every course. If you already own Full Garage, update the app and the courses are there.

Who are the courses for?

Anyone who wants to learn the order of work before touching a real car: beginners doing their own maintenance, students and apprentices, and drivers who want to know what a job involves before they pay for it.
